In 2024, venture capitalists (VCs) are operating out of both optimism and a sense of caution, as the market readjusts from the highs of last year’s record-breaking boom. As the venture ecosystem changes, a number of central trends are defining the industry.

- Increased focus on profitability and fundamentals: Investors are becoming more discerning, leaning towards startups that demonstrate strong unit economics and a clear path to profitability. ‘Growth at all costs’ will give way to more disciplined investing strategies.
- Emerging markets and IPO resurgence: Expect a renewed focus on emerging markets (especially Latin America and Southeast Asia) due to maturing entrepreneurial ecosystems, and the potential resurgence of IPOs as an exit route (as M&A activity continues to become more challenging from a regulatory standpoint).

While the venture capital landscape presents opportunities, it also faces significant challenges.
- Dry powder pressure: The amount of unallocated capital (‘dry powder’) is at an all-time high, putting intense pressure on firms to deploy it in quality deals – a factor that could push valuations up and eat into returns.
- Corporate governance and down-rounds: The scrutiny of corporate governance, heightened in the wake of a raft of recent venture-backed company controversies, and the continued existence of down rounds (whereby companies raise financing at lower valuations than their previous transactions) also punctuate the challenges that many startups face in securing financing.
